The wood of walnut varies from light to dark chocolate brown in color with easily distinguishable heart and sapwood. The sapwood is grey-white to reddish-white while the heartwood is light grey, mouse-grey to dark brown with occasional colored stripes (watermarks) depending upon age and location.
