Wood Types
Choosing a wood type can be one of the most enjoyable steps in the customization process. Whether you prefer a tight grain like quartersawn oak or the look of beautifully aged reclaimed barnwood, you can learn more about these and other wood types we offer here.
Janka Hardness Rating = 950
The natural color of brown maple wood can vary between creamy white and dark brown shades. It has a smooth grain and accepts paint well. Brown maple is sourced from the heartwood of maple trees. Though it's also called "soft maple," it is still considered a hardwood.
Janka Hardness Rating = 950
Cherry is one of the most naturally beautiful hardwoods and is often imitated. The natural coloring of this wood varies from light brown to dark reddish brown with an irregular wood grain. It looks excellent with a clear or light finish to accentuate its natural beauty. Many people will get a clear finish and allow it to darken naturally over time. We also offer rustic cherry that has more streaks and knots.
Janka Hardness Rating = 830
The color of elm wood can vary substantially. The heartwood is light to medium reddish brown, and the paler sapwood is usually distinct. The grain interlocks with a somewhat coarse, very irregular and uneven texture.
Janka Hardness Rating = 1820
This very strong and hard wood has a light brown/tan to reddish-brown color with a straight, indistinct grain. Hickory's beauty is best accented with a light or clear finish at a higher sheen/gloss. Not all of our woodworking furniture can be made in hickory wood. If you want an item in hickory but do not see it as an option, please contact us. We also offer rustic hickory that shows hickory wood with more intense characteristics found in the knots.
Janka Hardness Rating = 1450
Maple is a strong, dense hardwood. Its color is light brown with a reddish cast, and the grain is usually straight. This is a premium wood. Not all woodworking furniture can be made in maple wood. If you want an item in maple but do not see it as an option, please contact us.
Janka Hardness Rating = 1290-1360
For good reason, oak wood is a craftsman's favorite for furniture and flooring. This wood ranges in color from light beige to brown, and even red. Its tight and fairly straight grain makes it incredibly durable. Oak stains well too! White oak has more water resistance making it great for furniture (and whiskey barrels!).
Janka Hardness Rating = 1360
The main difference between quartersawn oak versus the typical oak is the way it's cut. Quartersawn oak is first quartered at 90-degree angles which results in a straighter grain pattern. This type of cut makes it more resistant to warping and more durable in strength when compared to regular flat-sawn oak. You may also see some of our products crafted from rustic quartersawn oak. This type of rustic oak has an increased number of naturally occurring characteristics (ie., knots, nail holes, and worm holes).
Janka Hardness Rating = Varies
Reclaimed wood (or barnwood) gives the ultimate rustic look. The natural aging process of reclaimed wood results in varying shades of browns and grays. Depending on the type of reclaimed wood (poplar, oak, etc.) the Janka rating can be 40 points higher than virgin wood. Most of our reclaimed barnwood furniture and decor are made from white oak, which makes each piece incredibly durable! As a bonus, building with reclaimed wood is an eco-friendly way to upcycle wood from previous buildings.
Janka Hardness Rating = 700-1450
The actual spalting process isn’t a very appealing topic for dinner conversation, but a spalted wood dining table, with its unique appearance, has always been in high demand. Spalting (the beautiful, contrasting dark lines and swirls) is the result of funghi living in the tree, causing the contrasting discoloration. Beetles also often contribute to the wood's spalted beauty as they make their way through the tree. Only spalted wood with partial decay is used to handcraft our furniture and decor. As with all the woods we use, spalted maple becomes extremely durable after the drying process.
Janka Hardness Rating = 770
Sycamore is a beautiful wood with a fine grain, beautiful texture, and tiny surface flecks. It is stunning as a live edge slab. Many of our sycamore pieces include spalted sycamore (see Spalted Maple for an explanation of spalting) that gives you an incredibly interesting and unique piece.
Janka Hardness Rating = 1010
Walnut wood is a dense wood with a smooth, consistent grain that can sometimes have a few burls. This strong and durable wood has varying shades of color from a pale tan to gray to chocolate brown. Walnut is a beautiful choice that looks great with either a natural or darker finish.
