Custom Furniture Process & Timeline:
What to Expect From Design to Delivery

Ordering custom furniture is an exciting opportunity to create something made specifically for your home, your space, and the way your family lives. It can also feel like a big decision, especially when you are choosing dimensions, wood species, finishes, and design details for a piece you may own for decades.
At Rustic Red Door, our goal is to make the custom furniture process clear, personal, and enjoyable. Whether you want to adjust one of our existing designs or create a completely new piece, our team will help guide you from the first idea through final delivery.
How long does custom furniture take?
Rustic Red Door custom furniture may take up to approximately 18 weeks from final approval to delivery. Timing depends on the furniture type, materials, design complexity, woodworker schedule, finishing requirements, and delivery location.
Here is what you can expect when ordering custom furniture.
Step 1: Choose a Piece to Customize—or Share Your Idea

Many custom projects begin with a furniture design a customer already loves but needs in a different size, wood species, finish, height, or configuration. Other projects begin with a sketch, inspiration photo, or an idea for something entirely new.
You can contact us through the Item Customization Inquiry form, by phone, email, online chat, or during an in-person visit.
When submitting your inquiry, include as much information as possible, such as:
-
The product you are interested in customizing
-
Your preferred dimensions
-
The type of wood or finish you have in mind
-
Photos, sketches, or inspiration images
-
Features you would like to add, remove, or change
-
Details about how and where the furniture will be used
-
Your desired delivery timeframe
-
Any existing furniture or finishes you hope to coordinate with
Do not worry if you have not made every decision yet. You do not need to know exactly what you want before contacting us. Our team can help you compare your options and determine what may work best for your space.

What Parts of a Furniture Design Can Be Customized?
Customization options vary by product and woodworker, but many pieces can be adjusted to better suit your needs.
Depending on the design, available changes may include:
-
Overall length, width, height, or depth
-
Wood species
-
Stain or finish color
-
Tabletop style or thickness
-
Table base or leg design
-
Dining or counter height
-
Middle leaves or end extensions
-
Drawer, door, or shelving configurations
-
Hardware and metal accents
-
Edge treatments and distressing
-
Headboard or footboard height
-
Storage features
-
Special functional or accessibility needs
Some designs have structural or construction limitations, so not every requested change will be possible. Our team will review your ideas with the woodworker and recommend an option that maintains the strength, stability, and appearance of the finished piece.

Step 2: Work With One of Our Design Experts
After we receive your inquiry, one of our design experts will review the information you provided. If we need clarification, we will contact you by phone or email before preparing your quote.
During this stage, we will discuss how you want the piece to look, how it needs to function, and how it will fit into your room.
We may ask questions such as:
-
How many people should the table seat?
-
Does the furniture need to fit within a specific wall or floor space?
-
Would you like the piece to coordinate with furniture you already own?
-
Do you prefer cleaner wood or wood with more natural character?
-
Do you need additional storage?
-
Will the piece need to travel through narrow doorways or staircases?
-
Are there specific design features that are especially important to you?
We can help you make changes to an existing Rustic Red Door product or work with you to design something from the ground up. Throughout the process, we will explain your options, offer recommendations, and communicate with you as the design develops.

Step 3: Receive and Review Your Custom Quote
Once the main design details have been determined, we will prepare a quote for your project.
Custom furniture pricing is based on several factors, including:
-
Overall size
-
Design complexity
-
Construction requirements
-
Hardware or metal components
-
Storage features
-
Extension mechanisms
-
The amount of customization involved
A small dimensional adjustment may affect pricing differently than a completely original design. Material availability and specialized construction can also influence the final cost.
Your quote will be based on the information available at that stage. If the dimensions, materials, or design details change later, the price may also need to be adjusted.

Step 4: Confirm the Final Design Details
Before your furniture enters production, carefully review all of the approved specifications.
Depending on the project, these details may include:
-
Overall dimensions
-
Hardware
-
Extension options
-
Storage configuration
-
Special construction details
-
Pricing
-
Estimated production timeframe
Some custom projects may also include a drawing, sketch, written specification sheet, wood sample, or other design reference. The exact approval process will depend on the complexity of the piece and the woodworker producing it.
Because custom furniture is made specifically for you, it is important to confirm measurements and design details before production begins. Changes may be limited—or may result in additional costs and delays—once materials have been ordered or construction has started.

Can Custom Orders Be Changed or Canceled?
If you need to request a change, contact us as soon as possible.
Whether a change can be made will depend on how far the order has progressed. A modification may be possible before materials are ordered or construction begins, but it can become more difficult once the piece is in production.
Custom and made-to-order furniture is created specifically for an individual customer and may be subject to different change, cancellation, and return policies than in-stock furniture. Be sure to review the terms associated with your order before approving the final design.

Step 5: Your Furniture Is Handcrafted
Once the order is finalized and approved, the design is sent to one of our artisan woodworkers.
Your furniture will be individually handcrafted from solid wood using careful construction methods and close attention to detail. The process may include selecting and preparing the wood, building the main structure, sanding, distressing, staining, finishing, assembling, and inspecting the completed piece.
This is not mass-produced furniture pulled from a warehouse. Each piece is made for a particular customer and built to heirloom-quality standards.
The time involved allows the woodworker to focus on the details that contribute to the appearance, strength, and longevity of the furniture.

Understanding Natural Wood Variation
Solid wood is a natural material, so no two pieces will look exactly alike.
Depending on the wood types, your furniture may include variations in:
-
Wood grain
-
Color and tone
-
Knots
-
Mineral streaks
-
Wormholes
-
Saw marks
-
Nail holes
-
Distressing
-
Reclaimed markings
-
Board texture
-
Stain absorption
These characteristics are part of what makes handcrafted wood furniture unique. Samples and photographs can provide helpful guidance, but they cannot guarantee an exact match because each board accepts stain and finish differently.
Reclaimed barnwood and character-rich wood selections may have more visible variation, while cleaner wood options may provide a more uniform appearance. Our team can help you choose the option that best reflects your preferences.

Step 6: Production Timeline
Custom furniture takes time to build properly. Depending on the type of furniture, the extent of the customization, material availability, and the woodworker’s current schedule, delivery may take up to approximately 18 weeks.
The overall timeline can include:
-
Initial consultation and information gathering
-
Design development
-
Quoting and revisions
-
Customer approval
-
Material sourcing
-
Construction
-
Sanding and finishing
-
Final curing and quality inspection
-
Delivery scheduling
The estimated production period typically begins after the order details have been finalized and all required approvals and payments have been completed.
Timelines are estimates rather than guaranteed delivery dates. Complex designs, specialty materials, holidays, seasonal demand, weather, or delivery logistics may affect the schedule.
If you need furniture by a specific date—such as a holiday, move, wedding, or family gathering—let us know as early as possible. We will help you determine whether the requested timing appears realistic before the order is finalized.

Step 7: Measure Your Space and Delivery Path
Before approving a custom order, confirm that the furniture will fit both the room and the path it must travel during delivery.
Measure:
-
The available wall and floor space
-
Doorways
-
Hallways
-
Staircases
-
Landings
-
Elevators
-
Ceiling heights
-
Tight corners
-
Exterior entrances
Remember to account for baseboards, trim, vents, windows, doors, light fixtures, and other obstacles.
For dining tables, also allow enough room for chairs to be pulled away from the table comfortably. For bed frames, confirm the overall outside dimensions of the frame. For hutches, armoires, and tall dressers, check ceiling clearance and any overhead fixtures.
Large furniture may be built in multiple sections for easier delivery and assembly, but this depends on the design. If access may be difficult, tell us during the design process so the woodworker can determine whether special construction considerations are needed.

Step 8: Delivery and Setup
Once your furniture is complete, delivery arrangements will be coordinated with you.
Before delivery day:
-
Clear a path from the entrance to the furniture’s final location
-
Remove fragile or valuable objects from the area
-
Make sure the room is ready for installation
-
Confirm that pets and children can remain safely away from the delivery path
-
Notify us of gates, restricted roads, elevators, stairs, or unusual access conditions
Delivery and setup details can vary depending on the item, location, and delivery method. Review your order information to understand which services are included and whether any special preparations are required. Most furniture includes white glove delivery. Our delivery partners will bring your furniture into your home and place it for you.
Providing accurate information about your property and delivery access helps prevent delays or unexpected complications.

Why Custom Furniture Is Worth the Wait
Custom furniture allows you to create something that truly fits your home—not only in size, but also in function, style, and character.
Instead of settling for a piece that is almost right, you can choose the details that matter most to you.
A custom piece can help you:
-
Make better use of an unusual space
-
Accommodate a large family or frequent gatherings
-
Match an existing room design
-
Add storage where you need it most
-
Select the wood and finish you prefer
-
Create furniture with meaningful personal details
-
Invest in a piece designed to remain in your family for years
Our customers often tell us that seeing their finished furniture for the first time makes the wait worthwhile. When a piece is thoughtfully designed, carefully handcrafted, and built to last, it becomes more than another purchase. It becomes part of your home’s story.
