The Natural Character of Walnut Dining Tables

Walnut is prized in furniture making for its rich natural color and distinctive grain. Its tones can range from lighter brown to deep chocolate, with grain patterns and natural variations that give each solid walnut dining table its own character. Rather than looking perfectly uniform, real walnut showcases the differences found naturally within the wood.

For an even more organic appearance, a live edge tabletop preserves the natural contours along the edge of the slab. Explore our live edge dining tables for additional solid wood designs that highlight the original shape and character of the tree.

Choosing a Solid Walnut Dining Table

Start by considering the size and shape that work best for your dining area. Rectangular tables provide plenty of surface area for larger rooms and gatherings, while round tables can be a practical choice for more compact or square dining spaces. Browse our round dining tables if shape is one of your main considerations.

Base style also changes the appearance and functionality of a walnut table. Wood bases can create a cohesive solid-wood look, while steel bases bring a contrasting material and more contemporary character. If your seating needs change throughout the year, explore our extendable dining tables for designs created to provide additional dining space when needed.

Customizing Your Walnut Dining Table

Walnut's natural color makes the wood itself an important part of the table's design. Finish choice can highlight its grain and variation, while the tabletop profile, dimensions, and base determine the table's overall style.

Many Rustic Red Door dining tables can be customized with different dimensions, woods, finishes, and base designs depending on the table. Consider your room dimensions, everyday seating needs, preferred style, and how you plan to use the table before deciding on a configuration. Yes. Walnut is a hardwood commonly used for furniture and is well suited to dining tables and regular household use. Like any real wood furniture, protecting the surface from excessive heat, moisture, and harsh cleaners will help preserve the table and its finish.

Walnut is a hardwood valued for its rich color, distinctive grain, and natural variation. These characteristics give solid walnut dining tables visual depth and make the natural wood an important part of the overall design.

Walnut is known for brown tones that can range from lighter areas to deep chocolate brown. Because it is a natural material, color and grain vary from board to board rather than appearing completely uniform.

Rustic Red Door's walnut dining tables are crafted from solid walnut wood. Natural grain patterns, color variations, and other characteristics of the wood will be visible throughout the table rather than being printed or replicated on a manufactured surface.

A live edge walnut dining table preserves the natural contours of the wood along portions of the tabletop rather than cutting every edge into a perfectly straight line. The result highlights the organic shape, grain, and individual character of the walnut slab. Browse our live edge dining tables for more designs.

Solid wood tables are constructed primarily from real wood rather than a thin wood veneer applied over another material. Solid wood can develop character over time and can often be repaired or refinished after years of use.

Allow about 24 inches of table width per person for comfortable everyday seating. You’ll also want approximately 36 inches between the table and surrounding walls or furniture so chairs can be pulled out comfortably. See our Dining Table Size Guide for more help choosing a size.

Climate Control & Light

Do not place your new wooden furniture in direct sunlight. Over time, UV rays can bleach and damage the integrity of the wood.

Place your wooden furniture away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, or heating vents. Regular exposure to heat will eventually dry and warp the wood.

Avoid significant fluctuations in temperature and humidity which cause the wood to expand and shrink. Use a dehumidifier or humidifier to maintain a more stable climate. The ideal climate for wooden furniture is a consistent 60-80˚F and 30-60% humidity, all year.

Regular Care

Use placemats, tablecloths, trivets, and coasters for tables. While our wooden furniture has a durable finish, heat and moisture can damage any wooden surface.

Avoid the use of rubber and plastics on wooden furniture. As plastics break down, they can bleach their color onto the wood’s surface and chemically damage the finish.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Dust your wooden furniture frequently. Dust with the grain of the wood to maintain the integrity of the natural wood design.

Microfiber cloths are best at trapping dirt but any soft cloth can be used to dust your furniture. Refold the cloth often to avoid redepositing dust back onto the surface.

Avoid spray polishes. Repeated use causes a build-up of the polish which dulls the surface of your furniture.

Consistently use the same type of polish on your wooden furniture. Using a wax-based polish and an oil-based polish interchangeably can result in a cloudy or streaked appearance on your wood finish.

Only use cleaning products that are designed for the finish applied to your particular piece of wood. When in doubt, a soft cloth moistened with water and a drop of detergent will adequately clean most wooden surfaces. To regularly clean a frequently used wooden surface, such as a dining table, a mixture of 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar to 1 cup of water will help remove normal daily residue.

Never saturate your wooden surfaces. When using a moistened wet cloth to clean your wood, immediately rinse and dry the surface when you are finished.

Powder-coated metals may be cleaned with a clean, damp cloth.
