Best Dining Table Designs to Maximize Legroom
How important is leg placement when you begin your search for the perfect dining table? If you’ve ever had to straddle a chunky leg or your knees have fought with a leg’s location (and lost the battle), you know that each leg's location is critical for comfortable seating. And when it comes to seating your favorite people, their comfort is usually at the top of a good host’s list.
The custom Pathway Dining Table pictured above is a beautiful example of a table with perfect leg placement for maximum comfort. (Check out our collection of extendable dining tables that can quickly and easily expand for comfortably seating more guests.)

4-Legged Tables
With a more traditional-looking farmhouse 4-legged table like the Walden Dining Table shown here, allow a minimum of 24” of leg room between the floor and bottom edge of table skirt.
4-legged rectangular tables limit legroom flexibility on standard width tables (42"W-48"W) but are still an excellent solution for narrow eating spaces that require a table that's 36"W or less.
Knee-to-Table Leg Distance
The distance between the table leg and knee should be at least 12” as shown in this magnificent Wexway Farmhouse Dining Table.
Minimizing Knee Knocking
If your design plan includes placing a chair on every corner as shown in our rustic Thornwood Dining Table, having ample legroom can be an issue for adult seating. Tip: Consider seating adults on the sides and kids at the ends or vice versa.
The Path of Least Resistance
When it comes to the least amount of legroom restrictions, a single pedestal base table from our round dining table collection will serve you well. Moderately sized pedestal bases are generally best for tables between 42"- 48".
Discussing your options with our design experts will give you the right combination of base to tabletop. (Shop our beautiful Foles Dining Table pictured here.)
Legroom With a Steel Base
This beautifully unique Live Edge Walnut Dining Table illustrates the same ideal space between steel bases and knees applies: 12” minimum.
ADA Compliance for Special Needs
A separate set of requirements is followed for designing and meeting ADA compliant dining tables that allow ample space for mobility assistance devices. Our Granby Barnwood Dining Table, as well as most of our tables, can be customized to meet the following recommendations:
-
Minimum clearance between floor and bottom edge of table skirt of 27” with 29” preferred
-
Knee clearance extends at least 19” under the table
-
30” clearance between table legs
(Our Lead Designer Shaun happens to be highly trained and qualified to assist with implementing these requirements in your table's design.)
