Sizing Your Table

How many people will your table seat?

Seating depends on shape as much as size. Use these as a starting point: plan at least 24″ of table width per person, and allow 36″ between the table edge and the wall or other furniture — 42″–48″ for optimal spacing. Every table here can be built to a size that isn’t on the list. Send us your room dimensions and we’ll tell you honestly what will fit and still leave walking room.

Rectangular Dining Tables

Table Length Comfortably Seats

60″ 6
72″ 6–8

Heights Dining 30″ · Counter 36″ · Pub 42″
Widths 36″, 42″ or 48″ wide
Extensions 1–4 12″ middle leaves · 2 – 18″ end extensions

Most rectangular tables take 1–4 middle leaves, and more are possible — ask us. Adding two 18″ end extensions provides room for at least two additional guests and may accommodate even more, depending on chair size, desired spacing, and the original seating arrangement.

Adding up to two 12″ middle leaves extends the table in one direction, turning the square into a rectangle when you need extra seats.

Seating to Match

Chairs built to match

A custom table deserves seating that belongs to it. We build chairs and benches in the same hardwoods, stains and finishes as your top, so the grain and color read as one set rather than two purchases.

Side chairs, armchairs for the ends, upholstered seats, or a bench along one side to seat two more without crowding the room. Tell us your table spec and we'll quote the chairs alongside it.

Questions

Table FAQs

What types of dining tables does Rustic Red Door Co. offer? +

Rustic Red Door Co. offers a wide selection of handcrafted solid wood dining tables in a variety of sizes, styles, and wood species. Our collection includes farmhouse dining tables, live edge dining tables, reclaimed wood dining tables, and contemporary designs. Many tables can be customized to complement your home and seating needs.

Are your dining tables made from solid wood? +

Yes! We specialize in handcrafted solid wood dining tables made from quality hardwoods such as oak, walnut, maple, and cherry. Unlike furniture made primarily from particleboard or veneers, solid wood tables showcase natural grain patterns and distinctive character. Explore our walnut dining tables and white oak dining tables for beautiful hardwood options.

Can I customize the size, wood species, or finish of my dining table? +

Yes! Many of our dining tables can be customized with different dimensions, wood species, stain colors, finishes, and base styles. Whether you're furnishing a small breakfast nook or a spacious dining room, our team can help you explore options that fit your needs. Customization availability varies by design.

How do I choose the right dining table size? +

Start by measuring your dining area and allowing approximately 36 inches of clearance around the table for chairs and movement. Consider how many people you seat regularly and whether you entertain larger groups. For flexible seating, explore our extendable dining tables, which provide additional space when needed.

How many people can comfortably sit at a dining table? +

A general guideline is to allow approximately 24 inches of table edge per person for comfortable seating. For example, a 72-inch rectangular table typically seats six people, while a 96-inch table can often accommodate eight. Actual seating capacity depends on the table's shape, base design, and chair dimensions.

Do you offer extendable dining tables? +

Yes! Our extendable dining tables are designed to accommodate everyday dining and larger gatherings. Extension options vary by model and may include center leaves or end extensions. We also offer square extendable dining tables and square-to-round dining tables for versatile dining spaces.

What is the difference between reclaimed wood and new solid wood dining tables? +

Reclaimed wood dining tables are crafted using salvaged wood, often from historic barns and buildings. They feature natural character such as nail holes, weathering, and distinctive grain patterns. New solid wood tables are made from freshly sourced hardwoods and often have a more consistent appearance. Both offer durability, natural beauty, and timeless appeal.

What is a live edge dining table? +

A live edge dining table preserves the natural contours of the tree along one or more edges, highlighting the wood's organic shape and character. Each slab features unique grain patterns and natural variations, making every table distinctive. Explore our live edge dining tables for one-of-a-kind designs.

Do you offer epoxy or river dining tables? +

Yes! Our epoxy tables combine natural hardwood with decorative resin to create distinctive furniture. Our river tables often feature epoxy flowing between wood slabs, creating a river-like design. Visit our epoxy table gallery for inspiration.

What dining table shapes do you offer? +

We offer dining tables in rectangular, square, round, and other specialty shapes. Rectangular tables are popular for larger dining rooms, while square dining tables work beautifully in smaller or more symmetrical spaces. Our square-to-round dining tables offer additional flexibility for different seating arrangements.

What dining table styles are available? +

Our collection includes traditional, rustic, farmhouse, industrial, and contemporary designs. Farmhouse dining tables offer warm, inviting character, while industrial dining tables often combine natural wood with metal accents. We also offer dining tables with legs for customers who prefer a classic four-leg design.

What is the best wood for a dining table? +

Oak, walnut, maple, and cherry are popular choices for solid wood dining tables. Oak is valued for its durability and prominent grain, while walnut offers rich, naturally darker tones. Maple provides a smooth, refined appearance, and cherry develops a beautiful patina over time. Explore our quarter sawn oak dining tables for distinctive grain patterns and our walnut dining tables for rich natural color.

How long does it take to receive a dining table? +

Lead times vary depending on the table design, customization options, and availability. Many handcrafted dining tables require approximately 10–12 weeks for production, with an additional 2–4 weeks for delivery depending on your location. Please refer to individual product pages for current estimates.

How do I care for a solid wood dining table? +

Clean your table regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaning products or abrasive materials. Use coasters, placemats, and trivets to protect the finish from heat, moisture, and scratches. Maintaining consistent indoor humidity also helps minimize natural wood movement throughout the seasons.

Why invest in a handcrafted solid wood dining table? +

A handcrafted solid wood dining table offers lasting beauty, durability, and timeless appeal. Unlike many mass-produced alternatives, quality hardwood furniture showcases natural character and skilled craftsmanship. With proper care, a well-made dining table can serve as a gathering place for family meals, celebrations, and everyday moments for generations.
